The Substation Control Technician is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and controlling substation equipment within Tatu City. This role involves observing meter readings, performing switching operations, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of high-voltage electrical networks. The technician must be capable of acting independently during emergencies and maintaining detailed records of all substation activities to support the infrastructure of Africa's largest urban land developer.
Key Responsibilities
Documentation: Prepare written documents, including substation maintenance reports and logbooks to record procedures and troubleshoot results.
Monitoring: Continually observe the functioning of station equipment through meters and gauges; monitor switchboard instruments for unusual operating conditions.
Operations: Prepare equipment for operation; start, stop, and control units by adjusting load and voltage and managing accessory regulating equipment.
Switching: Perform switching operations in accordance with standard operating procedures and maintain substation equipment for proper operation.
Logging: Maintain daily operating logs on all routine and emergency operations, reporting on line outages and weather conditions. Record hourly readings and manage recording instrument charts.
Emergency Response: Act independently during emergencies by performing duties in rapid succession involving switching, adjusting load/voltage, or extinguishing fires.
Safety Compliance: Issue protective tags through established safe clearance procedures for all equipment in the plant and substation.
Facility Maintenance: Periodically inspect the station (inside and outside) to determine proper operation and maintain security; perform minor adjustments and repairs.
Equipment Care: Maintain proper lubrication and cooling of generating units, transformers, pumps, motor generator sets, and other rotating machinery.
Problem Analysis: Analyze problems to determine the type of repair necessary and inform relevant personnel.
Additional Duties: Conduct public tours of the station as required, perform sub-dispatching, assist in training apprentices, and handle general housekeeping.
Requirements
Education: Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power Option).
Certification: Must be authorized to operate high-voltage equipment by a licensed utility or operator (e.g., KPLC, KETRACO, EPRA, etc.).
Technical Experience: Minimum of 3 years' experience in LV designs and as a plant operator for substations or generation plants.
Network Knowledge: Experience in the operation and maintenance of 11/33/66kV electricity networks.
Specific Skills: Experience in electrical plant matters, repair and maintenance of indoor 11kV boards and breakers; substation testing, annual maintenance, and primary/secondary injections.
Repairs: Enhanced skills in locating and quickly repairing defects in electrical systems, installing load break breakers, and high-voltage terminating.
