The Kenya Maritime Authority is looking for a Principal Ship Surveyor to provide regulatory oversight over the Kenyan maritime industry. This role involves ensuring maritime safety and security through technical evaluations, ship surveys, and inspections.
Key Responsibilities
Manage the Ship Registry and supervise the work of Recognized Organizations.
Supervise the building and conversion of Kenyan ships.
Conduct technical evaluations and calculations regarding ship safety equipment, machinery systems, load lines, oil pollution prevention, hull structure, stability, tonnage, and structural fire protection.
Oversee matters relating to Noxious Liquid Substances pollution, radio communication, and the carriage of dangerous chemicals and liquefied gases in bulk.
Perform surveys of Kenyan ships for the issuance of certificates.
Inspect small vessels.
Conduct stakeholder training on maritime safety and protection of the marine environment.
Implement international maritime conventions including SOLAS 74, MARPOL 73/78, IMSBC Code, ISM Code, and the International Ballast Water Management Convention.
Assist in implementing the IMDG Code and the Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding on port state control.
Supervise staff within the division.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Environment, or Nautical Science.
Certificate of Competency as Chief Officer or Second Engineer.
At least 3 years of experience at the level of senior officer.
