Kenya Maritime Authority was set up in June 2004 as the semi-autonomous agency in charge of regulatory oversight over the Kenyan maritime industry. The Authority seeks to strengthen maritime administration in Kenya through enhancement of regulatory and institutional capacities for maritime safety and security. The Legal Officer (Maritime Governance) is responsible for providing comprehensive legal support and expertise to the Kenya Maritime Authority.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting in rendering professional legal advice to the Director General on the relevance of international conventions and the need to ratify and domesticate international conventions related to maritime affairs.
Assist in administration and maintenance of the ship register.
Assist in review of reports submitted by the various departments relating to maritime affairs.
Assist in preparation and participation of international forums related to the maritime sector.
Assisting in drafting of national laws to enhance implementation of international conventions related to the maritime sector.
Assisting in ensuring that all records related to maritime affairs are updated regularly and produce quarterly reports.
Assisting in ensuring key issues and needs of the Authority are represented in international, regional, and national conferences/meetings/workshops.
Assisting in initiating reviews of maritime legal instruments and maritime policy documents.
Assisting in keeping track and updates of the amendments and changes of international maritime legislations and other Kenyan laws.
Assisting in drafting of Contracts, Agreements, and MOUs related to maritime affairs.
Assisting in preparing and interpreting legal opinions and offering guidance on maritime affairs.
Assist in initiating legal research and assignments related to maritime affairs.
Assist in conducting Legal Audits.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
Master of Laws (LLM).
Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Must possess a valid legal Practicing Certificate.
