FSD Africa is seeking a Head of Sustainable Insurance to lead the utilization of insurance investment and underwriting capital in driving sustainability goals across Sub-Saharan Africa. FSD Africa aims to reduce poverty across sub-Saharan Africa by building financial markets that are efficient, robust, and inclusive. The role involves contributing to thought leadership, managing complex project cycles, and developing a strong ecosystem for the insurance industry through strategic partnerships and the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance (NDSI).
Key Responsibilities
Thought Leadership & Ecosystem Development
Contribute to thought leadership in the utilization of insurance investment and underwriting capital to drive sustainability goals.
Participate in ecosystem analysis activities, including stakeholder analysis, and generate insights pertinent to the African insurance industry.
Keep up-to-date on market system developments and emerging legislation in SSA countries.
Develop and strengthen partnerships with key players in African and global insurance industries, specifically signatories to the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance (NDSI).
Support the development of strategy and plans to increase capital allocation that supports the green transition.
Project Cycle Management
Conceptualize, design, and write high-quality investment proposals for the Sustainable Insurance Programme.
Develop detailed implementation plans, including budgets and procurement of consultants/implementing partners.
Manage monitoring, results management, and reporting for projects, ensuring objective analysis and corrective actions.
Provide high-quality technical advice to Implementing Partners and consultants.
Financial Management & Fundraising
Manage finances associated with the Sustainable Insurance Programme to optimize impact and ensure donor compliance.
Identify opportunities for fundraising and co-funding.
Track and monitor budget spend and associated activities ensuring cost-effective utilization of resources.
Influencing & Communicating for Impact
Support transformative market development through effective influencing, advocacy, and communication strategies.
Develop and implement strategies for influencing key stakeholders and advocating for policy reform.
Work with the Strategic Communications team to develop content and represent FSD Africa in public forums.
Implementing Partner Engagement & Team Management
Identify, engage, and support key implementing partners to ensure synergies.
Manage staff and consultants, providing clarity on goals, expectations, and standards.
Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Qualifications and Education
Relevant Master’s degree and 11 years of experience OR a good quality Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and 12 years of experience progressing to a senior level.
Previous experience working in a field relevant to insurance or financial market development in Africa.
Excellent skills in written and spoken English.
Must be resident in Africa.
Essential Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
At least 11 years of experience working in the Insurance Industry in Africa with progressively increasing responsibility.
Strong network within the African Insurance Industry (Private and Public sectors).
Ability to manage project portfolios with a middle-level budget and handle project complexity.
Successful track record in the provision of technical assistance.
Experience in conducting and analyzing research.
Understanding of the development world and strategic MRM (preferred).
Desirable Attributes
Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
Knowledge of donor (specifically FCDO) policies and procedures.
Proficiency in French or local African languages.
