The Librarian at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB) is responsible for the overall management and strategic growth of the university library and curriculum material center. Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, the role involves strategic planning, staff supervision, and ensuring that library services align with the academic mission of the institution. The Librarian oversees the procurement of resources, maintains both physical and digital collections, and ensures a productive environment for research and study.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Plan for the continued growth of the library and the curriculum material center in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs.
Prepare strategic plans and quarterly reports for the library.
Compile statistics and reports relating to the use of the library.
Supervise the work of library employees in cataloguing, classification, circulation, indexing, and preservation of library materials.
Ensure and maintain a studious atmosphere in the library.
Receive and expedite all library book requests periodically, within budget limitations.
Make monthly reports on all acquisitions and additions for the departments, together with reports on unused funds.
Work with the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs to increase the procurement of library books and subscription to electronic library resources.
Ensure optimal utilization of the library and keep abreast with new technological trends relevant to the field.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or Library Studies from a recognized Institution. A PhD Degree will be an added advantage.
Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or Library Studies from a recognized Institution.
Must have served as an Assistant Librarian for a minimum of three (3) years.
Must have published at least one (1) article in a peer-reviewed journal.
Evidence of professional growth and membership in a relevant Association.
Experience with library systems, databases, and academic information resources.
Strong leadership, management, and communication skills.
