The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is seeking a Solid Waste Policy Analyst. UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The Urban Economy Branch of UN-Habitat has the mandate to promote local capabilities of local governments.
Role Overview
Under the supervision of the Waste Management Expert, UBSS, the consultant will undertake tasks related to environmental policy analysis, stakeholder coordination, and the evaluation of solid waste management strategies.
Responsibilities
- Stakeholder Analysis: Develop a stakeholder analysis report to study roles, demarcations, and gaps. Coordinate with stakeholders to define roles and responsibilities in environmental policy.
- Policy Evaluation: Evaluate past and current policy interventions concerning solid waste and marine litter management, specifically focusing on the context of Tanzania.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Identify and interview key stakeholders involved in Solid Waste Management (SWM) and marine plastic management, including government officials, NGOs, international organizations, and the private sector.
- Reporting: Formulate the first draft of the analysis report based on desk-based studies and interviews. The first draft of the stakeholder analysis report is expected by 31 March 2026.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Environmental Management, Environmental Policy, Economics, or a closely related field. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
- Experience: A minimum of five years’ experience in events organization, natural resources, and solid waste management or a related field.
- Skills: Excellent writing and communication skills, ability to organize and plan events, and strong critical and analytical thinking.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Desirable: Experience in the United Nations, other international development agencies, or governmental organizations.
