The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya. We are currently seeking a Senior Laboratory Analyst to serve as a Laboratory Manager in Kisumu. This position involves managing high-level laboratory operations, ensuring the accuracy of findings, and maintaining international standards (ISO 15189).
Key Responsibilities
- Verifying, approving, and recording laboratory findings.
- Supervising the disinfection, washing, and sterilization of apparatus, and maintaining equipment and reagents.
- Archiving specimens of medical importance for reference and maintaining laboratory registers.
- Preparing periodical reports, work plans, and manuscripts as required by laboratory leadership.
- Preparing requisitions for laboratory equipment, chemicals, stains, and reagents.
- Screening and assigning workload; planning, prioritizing, and assigning tasks and projects.
- Determining safe procedures and controls while implementing standard safety procedures.
- Participating in budget and procurement plan preparation.
- Preparing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Identifying training gaps of research scientists and technicians and recommending interventions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree: In Medical Laboratory Sciences, Analytical/Applied Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Science and Technology, Biotechnology, or an equivalent field (Mandatory).
- Master of Science Degree: In disciplines such as Medical Parasitology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Epidemiology, Laboratory Management, Molecular Biology, or Virology (Mandatory).
- Training: Must have completed a Supervisory Course lasting not less than two (2) weeks (Mandatory).
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Computer Applications (Mandatory) and experience in Bioinformatics and Statistical analysis.
- Quality Standards: Trained in ISO 15189 implementation.
- Competencies: Strong analytical, communication, reporting, mentorship, and interpersonal skills.
