Role Overview
The Senior House Officer in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is responsible for providing high-quality clinical care, reviewing and managing patients in a fast-paced emergency setting. The role involves diagnostic assessments, performing life-saving procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Service
Review and examine patients consistently by taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies.
Attend to critical patients in a timely manner and perform privileged and potentially life-saving emergency procedures when necessary.
Monitor patients’ progress regularly and initiate discussions with patients and caregivers to improve diagnostic and therapeutic care.
Timely initiation of care pathways in accordance with international guidelines for patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and Acute stroke.
Consult with relevant consultants and departments to determine the best treatment plan for specialized cases.
Participate in establishing planning parameters for referral cases received at AKUH.
Collaborate with nursing staff to ensure all treating equipment is functional and available for patient care.
Work closely with clinical care teams to reduce errors, improve skillfulness, and optimize resource utilization.
Integrate clinical research activities, shared knowledge, and institutional quality improvement initiatives into daily practice.
Counselling & Patient Education
Educate patients on wellness, prevention, and early detection of medical conditions.
Provide appropriate resources, materials, and referrals to patients and their family members or caregivers.
Inform patients regarding informed consent, choice of attending physician, and the right to seek a second opinion.
Requirements, Experience, and Skills
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).
Registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council (KMPDC).
Accredited certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
At least 2 years of post-internship experience, preferably in a busy emergency department.
Emergency medicine training is an added advantage.
Personal traits of patience, compassion, responsibility, honesty, respect, and intellectual curiosity.
Technical competency with hospital equipment and MS Office Applications.
Strong communication skills and ability to work as a team player under minimal supervision.
Ability to manage work-related stress and meet strict deadlines.
