Job Description
The Ophthalmic Care Nurse - Locum is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients with eye conditions within clinical and procedural settings. This role involves close collaboration with ophthalmologists to facilitate diagnostic tests and minor surgical procedures. The incumbent will be expected to provide comprehensive pre- and post-operative care, manage ophthalmic medications, and educate patients on their treatment plans to ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Provide specialized nursing care to patients with eye conditions in clinic and procedural areas.
Assist ophthalmologists during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures, including slit lamp exams, visual field tests, and intravitreal injections.
Prepare patients for ophthalmic procedures and provide diligent pre- and post-operative care.
Conduct and document visual acuity assessments and basic eye examinations accurately.
Administer ophthalmic medications and monitor patient responses to treatment.
Educate patients and their families on eye care, treatment protocols, and correct medication use.
Maintain stringent infection prevention and control standards across all procedures.
Ensure the proper handling, sterilization, and maintenance of ophthalmic specialized equipment.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) activities to maintain professional standards.
Assist ophthalmologists during routine eye examinations and complex surgical procedures.
Requirements and Qualifications
Diploma in KRN (Kenya Registered Nurse), KRCHN (Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse), or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution.
A Higher Diploma in Ophthalmic Care Nursing or a relevant certification in Ophthalmic Nursing Care will be an added advantage.
Must possess a valid Nursing practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
At least 3 years of working experience in an acute care hospital environment.
A minimum of 1 year of clinical experience specifically within an eye care clinic.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, administrative, and customer care skills.
