The Medical Officer (NOB) at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical services and administrative oversight within the Joint Medical Service (JMS). This role involves managing the fever clinic, performing day-to-day clinical duties, coordinating medical evacuations, and ensuring compliance with United Nations health policies. The officer will also handle emergency responses on a 24/7 basis and oversee occupational health issues within the work environment.
Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Run the JMS fever clinic for the clinical management of clients during disease outbreaks (e.g., COVID-19).
Perform daily clinical duties, including attending to walk-in patients at the clinic.
Manage medical evacuations and handle medical emergencies.
Conduct pre-placement and periodic medical examinations for staff.
Provide immunizations, travel advice, and medical counseling to clients.
Refer staff to and follow up with external specialists when necessary.
Organize and participate in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
Provide emergency response on a 24/7 basis, including house calls and hospital rounds as required.
Medico-Administrative Duties
Liaise with external dispensaries and host-nation medical facilities.
Follow UN policies regarding medical clearances, sick leave, and medical evacuations.
Recommend and handle reporting for medical evacuations in line with UN rules.
Ensure proper follow-up on all clinical cases.
Supervise and distribute work for nurses and other staff assigned to the fever clinic.
Establish and maintain relations with reliable hospitals, private medical facilities, and blood banks.
General Administrative Duties
Implement training programs (e.g., health awareness, disease prevention, isolation, and quarantine).
Undertake medical clearances according to UN guidelines.
Manage outpatient treatment and immunization requirements.
Prepare regular reports on clinic activities and maintain statistical information.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Medicine (MBChB) is required.
Experience: A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the medical field or a related area.
Certification: An up-to-date Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certificate is mandatory.
Technical Skills: Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in clinical medicine.
Competencies: Professional competence, mastery of subject matter, ability to work under pressure, and strong planning skills.
