Job Description
The Senior House Officer, Paediatrics A&E will provide quality primary paediatric care to all patients and continuously evaluate and improve the quality of primary paediatric care to meet patient treatment goals. This role involves active participation in clinical service, emergency care, patient education, and professional development within the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Service
Participate in ward and casualty work, including clerkship, patient education, and writing discharge summaries.
Maintain ongoing discussions of patients with instructors and consultants.
Participate in general and specialist clinics.
Contribute to quality improvement activities including medical audits, process indicators, and the development/application of management guidelines.
Participate in morbidity and mortality review preparations.
Initiate timely discussions with relevant consultants or departments to determine the best treatment plans for specialized cases.
Assist in establishing planning parameters for referral cases received at AKUH, Nairobi.
Coordinate with nursing and ward staff to ensure appropriate care and treatment for all patients.
Emergency Care
Assist in the examination and observation of emergency cases by taking histories, conducting physical exams, and ordering diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies.
Attend to critical patients in a timely manner.
Perform privileged and potentially life-saving emergency surgical and medical procedures when necessary.
Counselling & Patient Education
Educate patients and caregivers on wellness, prevention, and early detection.
Provide relevant materials, resources, and referrals to patients and their families.
Inform patients regarding informed consent, choice of attending physicians, and their right to seek second opinions.
Administration & Professional Development
Participate in departmental committees and internal business meetings.
Attend and present at Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions.
Develop and implement personal learning objectives.
Participate in the teaching of interns, elective students, and nurses.
Serve as a role model for junior colleagues.
Maintain professional interpersonal skills with colleagues and clients.
Readiness to take on extra duties and support team efforts as departmental needs arise.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.ChB).
Valid registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
A valid Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course Certificate.
Successful completion of an internship plus one year of post-internship experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to work with minimal supervision while remaining punctual and accountable.
Strong interpersonal, counseling, and patient education skills.
Patience, compassion, responsibility, honesty, and intellectual curiosity.
