Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) is a semi-autonomous agency responsible for regulatory oversight of the Kenyan maritime industry. The Authority is seeking a Marine Environment Officer to assist in strengthening maritime administration through environmental protection and the enhancement of regulatory capacities for maritime safety.
The role involves supporting the development and implementation of national oil spill response contingency plans for both coastal and inland waterways. The officer will work with various stakeholders to protect the marine environment from shipping-related activities and ensure compliance through inspections and public awareness initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the development, review, and update of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waterways.
Support the implementation of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters.
Help implement strategies for monitoring and preventing oil spills in Kenyan waters.
Cooperate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the protection of the marine environment from shipping activities.
Assist in conducting pollution prevention inspections at Kenyan ports and navigable waterways.
Facilitate public awareness campaigns focused on the prevention of ship-source pollution.
Assist in the implementation of International Conventions and other instruments related to marine pollution response and coordination.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates should possess at least one of the following academic qualifications or professional certifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies, Marine Environment, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Nautical Science.
Certificate of Competency – Marine Engineer Officer (STCW).
Certificate of Competency – Deck Officer (STCW).
