Job Description
This Laboratory Technologist role is based in Isiolo County under the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). The primary purpose of this position is to support the Eremet onsite laboratory through efficient specimen collection, preparation, and analysis. The technologist will be responsible for participant consent, phlebotomy, and handling various biological samples including blood, swabs, and tissue. The role also encompasses quality control, equipment maintenance, and administrative support within a research framework.
Key Responsibilities
Receive and obtain consent from participants referred to the Eremet onsite laboratory for specimen collection.
Perform phlebotomy and prepare samples for investigation purposes.
Collect oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swabs as required.
Accurately label and analyze samples (blood, NP/OPs, tissue, etc.).
Ensure proper documentation of applicable study data during all study procedures.
Perform routine maintenance of lab equipment.
Monitor the status of laboratory supplies and make necessary orders.
Complete QA/QC assignments on laboratory data, samples, and records.
Keep laboratory work areas clean and organized.
Assist with laboratory administrative duties and other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements and Qualifications
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (Mandatory).
Registered with a valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLLTB) (Mandatory).
Certificate in “Good Clinical Practice” and/or “Human Subjects Protection” (Mandatory).
Experience and working knowledge in research (Mandatory).
Mandatory experience working in Isiolo County.
Fluency in English, Turkana, and Swahili (both written and spoken) (Mandatory).
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office suite (Mandatory).
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organization skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team.
