The BBC World Service is the world's largest international broadcaster, broadcasting radio and television news in 29 languages. We are currently recruiting a Journalist to play a crucial role in the Newsday team in Nairobi. In this position, you will work on original stories, forward-planning pieces, and special programmes designed to make a significant impact on air, digital platforms, and throughout the BBC network.
Role Overview
The Journalist will be responsible for originating creative story ideas, identifying key guest contributors, and producing high-quality content tailored for both broadcast and digital platforms. This role requires a strong understanding of global current affairs, particularly those affecting African audiences, and a commitment to engaging diverse demographics including younger listeners and women.
Key Responsibilities
Story Origination: Suggest creative story ideas and treatments daily for the Newsday programme and other BBC platforms.
Guest Management: Identify the best guests to serve a story and secure their participation for broadcasts.
Audience Engagement: Apply a deep understanding of World Service target audiences, with a focus on high-priority groups like younger listeners and women.
Content Production: Write English-language content that is creative, clear, and concise for broadcast, digital platforms, and BBC News online.
Collaborative Output: Work across different teams and departments to maximize the reach and impact of editorial content.
Requirements and Qualifications
Expertise: Substantial understanding of international news and current affairs, with specific insight into stories relevant to audiences in Africa.
Live News Experience: Demonstrable experience working in a live and daily news environment, including covering breaking news.
Editorial Skills: Evidence of identifying original stories and bringing them to life through imaginative storytelling and innovative production techniques.
Digital Proficiency: Ability to create digital assets using audio, video, or stills and distribute stories effectively via social media.
Teamwork: Proven track record of being an inclusive and supportive team player who works well in high-pressure collaborative environments.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma (BA/BSc/HND) in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
