Job Description
Nature Kenya (the East Africa Natural History Society), Africa's oldest environmental Society, is seeking active journalists to serve as Environmental Media Champions. Nature Kenya was established in 1909 to promote the study and conservation of nature in eastern Africa and remains a non-political and not-for-profit membership society.
Role Overview
As an Environmental Media Champion, you will act as a key voice for biodiversity and conservation, bridging the gap between conservation science and public accountability. The role involves reporting on Kenya's Key Biodiversity Areas, policy processes, and institutional events to produce compelling narratives that reach a wide audience.
Key Responsibilities
Field Reporting: Conduct field visits to Kenya’s Key Biodiversity Areas and file stories for publication or broadcast.
Feature Production: Produce in-depth feature stories focused on biodiversity and conservation themes.
Event Coverage: Cover Nature Kenya events, including press conferences, international days, community forums, and policy dialogues.
Social Media: Post social media content to amplify biodiversity and conservation stories.
Script Development: Develop original investigative or explanatory story scripts in consultation with Nature Kenya.
Policy Engagement: Profile high-ranking decision-makers and policy processes (e.g., parliamentary committees, EIA reviews) to connect conservation science to public accountability.
Media Monitoring: Monitor the media landscape for significant environmental stories and flag them for response or amplification.
Mentorship: Participate in Journalist Forum meetings and mentor fellow environmental journalists.
Journalism Status: Must be an active journalist in print, radio, TV, or digital media.
Accreditation: Must hold a valid Media Council of Kenya accreditation.
Experience: 5+ years of environmental journalism experience.
Storytelling: Proven ability to deliver compelling stories on short notice.
Education: A Bachelor's degree or Higher National Diploma (BA/BSc/HND).
