Job Description
The Instructor for Adult Accident & Emergency (A&E) at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is a clinical and academic role responsible for providing high-quality patient care while mentoring junior medical staff. The position involves the assessment and management of both emergent and non-emergent patients, resuscitation, and the implementation of clinical protocols to ensure patient safety and efficiency within the department.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Management: Perform out-patient assessments and manage emergent and non-emergent patients. Lead resuscitation efforts for emergency cases and provide appropriate treatment for non-emergent patients.
Patient Coordination: Oversee patient admissions to the appropriate hospital units and handle external transfers and referrals within and outside AKUH.
Mentorship & Supervision: Supervise junior A&E doctors and residents, providing guidance and clinical leadership. Plan and implement Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes.
Policy Development: Participate in the review and formulation of healthcare policies, procedures, and best practice guidelines. Develop and implement patient care protocols and safety processes.
Team & Quality Coordination: Coordinate team dynamics to ensure operational efficiency. Address patient complaints and provide education to patients and their families.
Departmental Liaison: Work closely with consultants and various hospital departments to integrate patient care activities and develop treatment plans for specialized cases.
Resource Management: Ensure all clinical equipment is functional and available for treatment. Meticulously manage resources to reduce errors and optimize hospital utilization.
Research & Quality Improvement: Initiate and participate in clinical research, institutional quality improvement, and patient safety activities.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required
Academic Qualification: Master of Medicine (MMed) Degree.
Professional Registration: Must be registered by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDC).
Certifications: Valid certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
Soft Skills: Strong leadership, mentorship capabilities, and the ability to coordinate complex team dynamics in a high-pressure environment.
