Job Description
Avenue Healthcare is seeking a professional and compassionate ICU Nurse to provide high-quality nursing services and care to patients. The successful candidate will ensure patient review and treatment align with hospital protocols and standard nursing practices.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Navigation and Clinical Care: Work with the Clinical team to navigate patients through the treatment journey, addressing underlying medical conditions and providing treatment as per plan. Record and report all sentinel incidents/events within 24 hours using provided tools.
Critical Care Management: Manage patients requiring advanced life support interventions (e.g., mechanical ventilation, vasoactive infusions, dialysis). Continuously monitor and interpret vital signs using advanced systems and respond promptly to changes in patient condition.
Clinical Procedures: Assist in and manage complex bedside procedures including intubation, central line insertions, chest tube insertion, and peritoneal dialysis. Titrate IV infusions (e.g., inotropes, vasopressors, insulin drips, sedatives) according to prescribed parameters and ICU protocols.
Documentation: Maintain up-to-date ICU charts and flow sheets, including hourly input/output monitoring, pressure area assessments, sedation scores, and ventilator settings.
End-of-Life Care: Manage end-of-life care with empathy and professionalism, including comfort measures and supporting families through difficult decisions.
Patient Safety: Maintain ICU-specific competency and certification (ACLS, BLS, Critical Care Nursing). Ensure patient safety following International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG).
Ward Operations: Actively participate in patient admission, ward rounds, and receive handover reports from outgoing nurses. Ensure relevant consultants have explained procedures and obtained necessary consent.
Infection Control: Maintain and enforce infection control standards and observe infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI, and CLABSI) where applicable.
Financial & Governance Compliance: Manage costs to ensure unit financial viability. Adhere to corporate governance policies, including fraud prevention and implementing audit recommendations.
Supervision: Supervise Patient Assistants (PAs) as per their job description.
Requirements and Qualifications
BScN or Diploma in Nursing. (A Higher Diploma in Nursing is an added advantage).
A valid Nursing License from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
Valid certification in BLS, ACLS, and Critical Care Nursing.
At least 2 years’ experience working in a busy hospital environment.
Customer focus and results-oriented mindset.
Strong interpersonal, team-playing, and communication skills.
Highly responsive, ethical, and responsible nature.
