Role Overview
The General Nurse at Avenue Healthcare is responsible for providing professional nursing services while strictly adhering to the hospital's defined policies, protocols, and standards. The primary objective is to deliver high-quality patient care, ensure safety through international standards, and support the operational efficiency of the nursing unit.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory & Equipment Management: Conduct daily inventory checks of available equipment, ensure they are in good working condition, and report any malfunctions to the Bio-Medical Technician or Unit Manager.
Unit Performance: Support the unit's financial viability by offering quality care and maintaining positive relationships with all stakeholders.
Incident Reporting: Record all sentinel incidents/events and report them within 24 hours using designated tools.
Infection Control: Maintain and enforce infection control standards as per the hospital manual, observing specific bundles including SSI, VAP, CAUTI, and CLABSI where applicable.
Statutory Reporting: Compile and submit daily government reports (e.g., leprosy, cholera, maternal deaths) to the Unit Manager.
Clinical Care: Actively participate in ward rounds, receive shift handovers, and ensure thorough documentation of patient notes and reviews.
Patient Safety: Implement the 6 International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs), focusing on patient identification, effective communication, medication safety, surgical safety, infection reduction, and fall prevention.
Patient & Family Education: Provide relevant medical education and teaching to patients and their families based on their medical conditions.
Emergency Response: Organize emergency trolleys for immediate use during resuscitation, ensuring supplies are well-stocked and participating in emergency responses.
Drug Administration: Adhere strictly to the 10 rights of drug administration. Submit drug orders to the pharmacy promptly and ensure STAT doses are administered within 30 minutes. Manage D.D.A. drugs safely and maintain accurate registers.
Consultation & Consent: Update doctors and consultants on patient progress and critical values. Ensure consultants have explained procedures and obtained necessary patient consent.
Documentation: Complete official checklists for all patients prior to procedures (theatre, radiology, renal) and maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
Requirements and Qualifications
Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
A valid license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Up-to-date certificates in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
Minimum of 2 years of experience in nursing.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
High attention to detail and a result-oriented mindset.
Strong focus on customer service and reliability.
