Established in 1952, the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu is a 61-bed acute care facility part of the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS). The hospital is seeking qualified Critical Care Nurses to join their team.
Role Overview
The Critical Care Nurse is responsible for performing thorough assessments and providing continuous, direct care to critically ill or injured patients. This role involves monitoring vital indicators, administering complex treatments, operating life-support equipment, and ensuring a safe patient environment while maintaining accurate clinical documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment: Perform thorough assessments of patients' physical, emotional, and psychological needs. Monitor vital signs, oxygen levels, and other critical indicators.
Direct Clinical Care: Provide continuous care to critically ill or injured patients, monitoring their condition and responding effectively to changes in status.
Care Planning: Identify specific critical care needs and adopt care plans as necessary to meet those needs.
Treatment & Administration: Administer prescribed medications, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, and ventilator support.
Equipment Management: Set up and monitor medical equipment such as cardiac monitors, dialysis machines, mechanical ventilators, alarms, and oxygen delivery equipment.
Respiratory Support: Initiate mechanical ventilation (both invasive and non-invasive) based on physician orders.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure a safe environment through adherence to infection control practices and timely safety checks on beds, IV pumps, oxygen sources, and monitors. Uphold statutory regulations required by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Documentation: Ensure accurate, comprehensive, and timely documentation of all assessment data, investigation results, care given, and interactions with the multidisciplinary team or family.
Quality Improvement: Participate in unit-based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, spot checks, and data collection for quality indicators.
Leadership: Supervise and mentor junior nursing staff, providing guidance and support as needed.
Requirements
Diploma in KRN, KRM, KRCHN, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution.
Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing.
Valid Nursing practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, with at least 1 year of experience after post-basic qualification.
Must be current BLS and ACLS certified.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, administrative, and customer care skills.
