Role Overview
The Communication Infrastructure Support (CIS) Engineer is responsible for the engineering and design of various communication systems for Mission Nairobi. The role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing complex telecommunications equipment, managing radio networks, and supporting networking infrastructure across several embassy and residential locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Telephone Systems: Engineering, designing, installing, and repairing Embassy telephone equipment. This includes programming CS1000 telephone and CallPilot systems, Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), and Unity messaging Connection.
- Radio Networks: Designing, installing, maintaining, and repairing seven radio networks. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance for digital repeaters, handheld radios, base stations, antennas, and mobile radios.
- Network Infrastructure: Supporting unclassified networking infrastructure (OpenNet, Non-Enterprise Network - NEN) across locations including the main Chancery, Acacia, OAK, Chief of Mission Residences (CMR), and Deputy Chief of Mission Residences (DCMR). This includes managing switches, routers, and firewalls.
- Connectivity Management: Managing microwave point-to-point networks across seven LAN tail sites. Monitoring 20 Wide Area Network (WAN) circuits, troubleshooting connection issues, and collaborating with Internet Service Providers (ISP) and Washington-based program offices (ENM, ITSC).
- Audio-Visual Support: Assisting technicians with infrastructure setup and operation for high-profile meetings involving sound mixers, wireless microphones, and camera equipment.
- Technical Consultation: Analyzing user requests, providing technical guidance, and assisting the Procurement department with technical evaluations of hardware and software requests.
- Regional Travel: Providing support to other missions in the region as required.
Qualifications
- Education: A University degree in Computer Science, telecommunications, information systems, or a similar technical field is required.
- Experience: Three (3) years of relevant experience in Radio, Telephone, and Data network infrastructure at a level comparable to Tiers 2 and 3 support.
- Clearance & Medical: Candidates must be able to obtain and hold a security clearance and may be subject to a pre-employment medical exam and background investigation.
