Job Description
Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) is seeking a qualified Clinical Pathologist to join its team. The successful candidate will provide oversight and expert interpretation across various laboratory disciplines to ensure high-quality patient care.
Job Purpose
The role involves providing expert interpretation in clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, and molecular diagnostics. The Clinical Pathologist will support clinical staff in diagnosing and managing patients through laboratory science.
Duties and Responsibilities
Interpret specialized tests in haematology, including flow cytometry, and provide consultative input to clinicians.
Lead laboratory quality management, including the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Oversee clinical chemistry validation, establish reference intervals, and manage critical value policies.
Guide antimicrobial stewardship through the interpretation of culture/sensitivity results and antibiograms.
Support transfusion medicine practices and implement haemovigilance protocols.
Validate critical or unusual laboratory results prior to release and ensure timely communication with medical teams.
Participate in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and laboratory-clinical liaison rounds.
Teach and mentor trainees, while leading audits, research projects, and service improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from an institution recognized by KMPDC.
MMed in Clinical Pathology/Human Pathology or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by KMPDC.
Sub-specialty training in any laboratory medicine field will be an added advantage.
Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
Recognition as a specialist or sub-specialist by KMPDC.
Retention in the KMPDC register.
Valid Practice License from KMPDC.
Valid Professional Indemnity Cover.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
