Job Description
The Assistant Director Veterinary Services is responsible for providing comprehensive animal health services, veterinary public health services, animal disease control, and animal welfare services within Nairobi City County. This senior-level role combines managerial oversight of sub-county technical officers with specialized operational tasks, including forensic investigations, disease mapping, and clinical treatment of animals to ensure the health of livestock and the safety of animal products.
Key Responsibilities
Managerial and Supervisory
Supervise Sub-County technical Officers in the implementation of planned pest control activities.
Coordinate and promote the development and transfer of appropriate technologies for animal disease control.
Provide guidance and supervise technical officers during the implementation of field activities.
Operational Duties
Participate in economic impact assessments of animal diseases.
Undertake forensic investigations and compile detailed technical reports.
Offer veterinary services at ports of entry within the county.
Manage disease control activities such as disease search, mapping, vaccination, and enforcement of livestock movement regulations.
Train stakeholders on vector control programs, animal health, breeding, animal welfare, and good veterinary practices.
Provide clinical treatment for sick animals.
Analyze data and prepare reports on animal health, products, and markets.
Undertake postmortem examinations and other diagnostic tests.
Interpret laboratory results and make appropriate clinical or policy recommendations.
Inspect, grade, and license plants processing animal products and transport carriers/containers.
Examine animals and issue animal health certificates.
Participate in field efficacy trials for drugs, vaccines, and acaricides.
Disseminate data and information on animal health and market trends.
Collaborate with various stakeholders in the provision of veterinary services.
Financial and Asset Management
Participate in the development of the annual budget for the veterinary section.
Maintain responsibility for allocated physical assets, including office equipment and furniture.
Requirements
Academic Qualifications
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from a recognized institution.
A Master of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, or Occupational Safety and Health is considered an added advantage.
Professional Qualifications
Must be registered and retained by the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB).
Certificate in Computer application skills from a recognized institution.
Certificate in a Management Course from a recognized institution.
Demonstrated high degree of professional and technical competence and administrative capabilities.
Experience
Must have served in the grade of Chief Veterinary Officer (Job Group N) for a minimum period of three (3) years.
Statutory Requirements
Must meet the leadership and integrity requirements as per Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
