This is a temporary/short-term locum position available for a period of three (3) months at Pwani University. The role involves supporting the Microbiology and Parasitology department by maintaining laboratory standards, assisting in student training, and ensuring the smooth running of practical demonstrations and research activities.
Responsibilities and Duties
Student Support: Assist and train students on collecting, processing, and preservation of samples in both field and laboratory settings.
Instructional Support: Assist Microbiology and Parasitology lecturers in practical demonstrations and provide support in teaching and grading duties for Gross Anatomy practicals.
Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain the Microbiology and Parasitology laboratory, ensuring it is orderly and clean.
Preparation: Prepare reagents, preservative solutions, samples, and specimens for practical classes and examinations.
Apparatus and Experiments: Assemble supplies, construct apparatus, and set up classroom experiments and demonstrations.
Assessment Support: Set up OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and viva voce sessions for microbiology and Parasitology assessments.
Research Assistance: Provide technical assistance to researchers and participate in laboratory quality management systems.
Documentation and SOPs: Prepare and implement the use of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the laboratory.
Administrative Tasks: Assist in budget preparation and maintain updated inventories for consumables and non-consumables.
Maintenance: Troubleshoot machine errors and perform general maintenance and internal calibrations.
Waste Management: Dispose of solutions, used samples, and specimens according to institutional guidelines.
General Duties: Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience
A Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology and Parasitology (or equivalent) from a recognized institution OR a Diploma in Microbiology and Parasitology (or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
At least two (2) years of relevant work experience.
Proven integrity, honesty, independence, and innovativeness.
Membership in relevant professional bodies.
Experience working in a higher institution of learning is an added advantage.
