Role Overview
The Technical Advisor for the CBD COP17 will be embedded in the Ministry of Environment of Armenia to coordinate technical support in collaboration with the UNEP Ecosystems Division and relevant stakeholders. The role is focused on the preparation and organization of the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), scheduled to take place in October 2026 in Yerevan, Armenia. This is a part-time, home-based position reporting to the Head of the Nature Frameworks Support Unit, Biodiversity and Land Branch, within the Ecosystems Division.
Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Coordination: Coordinate technical support in collaboration with the UNEP Ecosystems Division, Regional Office for Europe, CBD Secretariat, and UN Residential Coordination Office in Armenia.
Policy Support: Provide targeted technical expertise directly to the Ministry of Environment of Armenia to advance the content and programme components of CBD COP17.
Needs Assessment Implementation: Build upon previous comprehensive needs assessments to address identified gaps in the organization of the country-led conference.
Liaison: Facilitate communication between various UNEP divisions and international initiatives to ensure a coherent approach to the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) implementation.
Reporting: Collaborate daily with the Programme Management Officer and provide regular updates to the Nature Frameworks Support Unit.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in biodiversity conservation, environmental science, international development, political science, social science, or a related field. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
Experience: Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in biodiversity and environment at national, regional, or global levels.
Advantageous Experience:
Direct work experience related to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
Experience in biodiversity conservation specifically within Armenia.
Previous experience in the United Nations system or Intergovernmental Organizations within multicultural environments.
Background in communication and outreach campaigns.
