Role Overview
The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world's environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the environment. The Business Model Expert will support the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership by providing high-level technical expertise in institutional hosting, operational structuring, and governance design.
Key Responsibilities
Institutional Hosting and Partnership Design
Support the detailed design of institutional hosting and partnership arrangements based on preferred institutional models.
Clarify roles and responsibilities for host institutions, contributing partners, and coordination mechanisms.
Develop institutional role descriptions, partnership contribution frameworks, and draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for host institutions.
Facilitate consultations and workshops with partners to discuss hosting arrangements and collaboration modalities.
Draft collaboration frameworks and cooperation agreements between host institutions and contributing partners.
Operational Structures and Transition Management
Prepare detailed operational documentation, including ToRs for the Global Coordination Unit (GCU) and facilitator mechanisms.
Outline operational action plans, organizational charts, and role/responsibility matrices to clarify accountability and reporting lines.
Develop a transition plan for the GCU to move to new hosts, including leadership transition action plans and secretariat recruitment support.
Provide advisory support for the restructuring of the Global Coordination Unit in line with agreed institutional models.
Governance Architecture and Formalization
Design and formalize simplified and effective governance architectures, ensuring inclusivity, transparency, and strategic direction.
Define mandates and memberships of governance bodies and clarify decision-making processes.
Prepare facilitation plans and agendas for Steering Committee meetings and potential sub-committees.
Review and adapt Terms of Reference for the Co-Chair role and Steering Committee to align with updated governance frameworks.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: An advanced university degree (Master's) in environmental sciences or a related discipline. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's) with an additional two years of qualifying experience (total 7 years) may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in organizational development, institutional governance, or strategy consulting.
Stakeholder Engagement: Demonstrated ability to facilitate complex stakeholder consultations and synthesize diverse viewpoints.
Knowledge: Solid understanding of UN systems, environmental governance, or biodiversity-related frameworks.
Technical Expertise: Proven track record in designing governance frameworks and business models for complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
