The Team Leader — Sorting Operations is responsible for supervising daily waste sorting operations within the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). This role ensures efficient team leadership, high sorting quality, safety compliance, accurate operational reporting, and coordination of plant activities to maximize recyclable material recovery while minimizing residual waste. TakaTaka Solutions operates at a global leading standard, recycling up to 95% of collected waste.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Operations
Lead and supervise sorting teams across mixed waste sorting, pig food sorting, and baling operations.
Allocate manpower efficiently and ensure daily sorting targets are achieved.
Conduct daily shift handovers and operational briefings.
Monitor staff attendance and maintain accurate casual labour tracking records.
Motivate teams and maintain high productivity standards.
Safety Compliance & Housekeeping
Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across the facility.
Ensure all employees wear full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Ensure all equipment and sorting areas are cleaned before and after each shift.
Investigate and report incidents, accidents, and near-misses and implement corrective actions.
Maintain high standards of workplace housekeeping and organisation.
Quality Control & Material Recovery
Implement and monitor quality control procedures for waste sorting.
Inspect sorting containers (“dabras”) to ensure correct material separation.
Monitor sorting efficiency and minimise contamination.
Improve processes to increase recyclable recovery rates and reduce residual waste.
Reporting & Data Management
Maintain accurate records for sorting output, baling quantities, staff attendance, and equipment performance.
Update production metrics and operational reports for the MRF Plant Manager.
Verify operational data including inflow, outflow, total sorted, and total baled.
Participate in plant meetings and performance reviews.
Operational Coordination
Coordinate forklift and wheel loader activities supporting sorting and baling operations.
Work with Logistics to schedule tipper trucks for material clearance.
Approve and manage waste inflow from internal camps or external transporters.
Coordinate equipment repairs with the Maintenance team.
Liaise with Construction Supervisors for facility improvements when required.
Inventory & Consumables Management
Monitor stock levels of operational consumables including baler straps, sorting containers (dabras), maintenance materials, and cleaning supplies.
Conduct regular stock checks with Stores and raise procurement requests when stock levels are low.
Ensure consumables are delivered on time and stored correctly.
Dispatch & Client Coordination
Supervise loading of recyclable materials onto client trucks.
Ensure dispatch records are accurately logged in the Sales Tracker.
Verify fraction type, bale count, weight, and dispatch date.
Coordinate with Accounts and Sales teams to reconcile invoices and dispatch records.
Staff Development & Performance Management
Manage staff scheduling across all shifts.
Conduct safety meetings and training sessions.
Identify training needs and support Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) training.
Participate in disciplinary processes and performance evaluations.
Provide leadership and guidance to sorting team leaders and staff.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: Diploma or Degree in a related field; Minimum KCSE Grade B.
Experience: 1 - 3 years of proven experience supervising or leading a production or operations team. Experience in waste management, recycling, or production environments is an added advantage.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in Google Sheets / Microsoft Office; Ability to identify and separate recyclable vs non-recyclable waste; Understanding of manpower utilisation and operational efficiency.
