Role Overview
The Genentech/Roche African Genomics Program (AGP) is seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented Scientific Program Manager. Based in Nairobi, this individual will serve as both a scientific and overall project manager on multiple genomic collaborations aimed at enabling and accelerating novel research on the African continent and beyond. This role is a key strategic partner that drives the successful execution of cross-functional initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and program roadmaps. The manager will facilitate collaboration across teams, manage complex program structures, and guarantee timely delivery of programs with quantifiable results.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Management: Manage and track multiple interdependent projects involving different collaborators and stakeholders.
- Data Flow Oversight: Organize and manage data flows, coordinating with teams in informatics, computational biology, software development, and information infrastructure.
- Program Delivery: Ensure on-time program delivery by managing related project timelines and workflows.
- Portfolio Management: Manage the overall health of the project portfolio, identifying risks and escalating issues as needed to ensure success.
- Communication: Consistently communicate program plans, progress, risks, changes, and successes with clarity and objectivity, fostering accountability across teams.
- Budget & Operations: Take responsibility for the overall program budget and liaise with global procurement and legal teams regarding service agreements and local contracts.
- External Representation: Represent Roche and the African Genomics Program with external scientific collaborators, including both academic and corporate partners.
- Strategic Risk Management: Foresee potential scientific and business risks for external collaborations and develop proactive solutions.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: A Ph.D. or MS in human genetics, translational biology, or similar scientific fields.
- Experience Tiers:
- Ph.D. holders: At least 2 years of post-PhD experience.
- Master's holders: 3-5 years of post-Masters degree experience.
- Bachelor's holders: 5-7 years of post-Bachelors degree experience.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of genetic or multi-omic datasets, including the use and analysis of whole-genome sequencing data.
- Project Management Skills: Demonstrated ability to define objectives, develop timelines, organize complex tasks, and meet goals independently.
- Organizational Excellence: Strong planning and prioritization skills with the ability to monitor usage of resources.
- Interpersonal Skills: Proven ability to influence and motivate teams without direct authority and bring diverse groups to consensus.
- Communication: Exceptional writing skills (proposals and slides) and professional communication for interfacing with stakeholders across multiple research fields.
