Job Description
The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is seeking a Research Officer (HSU) to join their team in Nairobi. The role involves contributing to the development of research proposals, including literature reviews and synthesizing findings to support health systems research. The successful candidate will take responsibility for community sensitization, stakeholder engagement, and qualitative data collection through interviews, focus group discussions, and observations. This role requires managing all interactions with study participants ethically to ensure the collection of high-quality data and actively participating in the analysis and dissemination of study findings.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to research proposal development, literature reviews, and synthesizing learnings.
Support the development of data collection tools.
Support and take primary responsibility for community sensitization, stakeholder engagement, and fieldwork planning.
Manage all interactions with study participants in ways that positively support ethical conduct and high-quality data collection.
Contribute to the management and analysis of qualitative study data, taking primary responsibility for designated areas.
Support the dissemination of findings through reports, manuscripts for publication, and scientific presentations.
Build capacity in social science research methods and qualitative analysis through continuous learning and participation in training.
Attend departmental and programme scientific meetings, including seminars and Social Science Group meetings.
Perform other assigned duties as required to support the research program.
Requirements and Qualifications
A Master’s degree in a relevant subject such as Social Science, Humanities, Anthropology, or Sociology (Mandatory).
At least three (3) years of research experience, specifically in collecting and analyzing qualitative research data through interviews, focus group discussions, and non-participant observations (Mandatory).
Evidence of ability to produce and publish research (Mandatory).
Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications (Mandatory).
Knowledge of NVivo (qualitative analysis) software (Mandatory/Added Advantage).
Excellent understanding of the Kenyan health system (Desirable).
Experience of participatory research and co-design (Desirable).
Experience of engaging with stakeholders at community, hospital, county and national levels (Desirable).
Excellent organizational, communication, writing, and presentation skills.
Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork within Kenya.
