Job Description
The Research Assistant (Maternal & Newborn Health) will support the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in its mission to reduce the burden of sickness and mortality in disease-endemic countries. This role involves contributing to the development of study protocols, managing ethics applications, and performing both qualitative and quantitative data analysis to generate research outputs.
Key Responsibilities
Protocol Development
Contribute to the drafting of study protocols and management of study data.
Assist in developing, piloting, and updating data collection tools.
Support the training of data collectors and oversee data collection activities.
Ethics and Compliance
Complete standard ethics submission paperwork for LSTM and relevant in-country ethics committees.
Coordinate mandatory training for research team members as required by ethics applications.
Track ethics submissions and respond to queries from Research Ethics Committees (REC) in a timely manner.
Prepare annual REC reports and maintain systematic files of consent forms and ethics documents.
Data Analysis
Perform qualitative data analysis using appropriate software.
Conduct qualitative and quantitative data analysis using SPSS, R, or STATA.
Analyze secondary data sets as required by the study.
Dissemination and Funding
Draft research outputs including conference abstracts, posters, presentations, publications, and blogs.
Coordinate inputs for publications and manage the submission process.
Contribute to grant funding applications and partner capacity development.
Identify national, regional, and international opportunities for disseminating research findings.
Requirements
Education: Master’s degree in a related field such as Global Health, Public Health, Midwifery, or Medicine.
Professional Qualification: Postgraduate professional qualification (e.g., Diploma of Tropical Medicine) or a certificate in Maternal and Child Health.
Knowledge: Deep interest and understanding of Maternal & Newborn Health (MNH) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).
Research Skills: Proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Experience: Familiarity with biomedical or social science research in LMICs and experience reporting for major donors like the Gates Foundation or Global Fund.
Languages: Fluency in English and Swahili is required. Swahili is essential for field interaction.
