Role Overview
The Project Coordinator - Livelihood & Resilience will coordinate and lead the planning, implementation, and quality assurance of livelihood, resilience, and market systems development interventions. This role focuses on supporting smallholder farmers (particularly youth and women), promoting climate-smart agriculture (CSA), strengthening agricultural value chains, and enhancing inclusive access to financial and agri-enterprise services in Makueni and Kitui counties.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning, Coordination, Implementation and Technical Guidance
Carry out community-based targeting and registration of smallholder farmers in collaboration with WFP and county technical departments.
Liaise with partners to prepare guiding materials on key technical approaches, including value chain development, market systems strengthening, financial services access, and climate-smart production.
Lead the coordination and implementation of all Market Systems Development (MSD) interventions, focusing on access to inputs, financial services, and value chains.
Ensure integration of market systems with climate-smart agriculture, nutrition, gender, and resilience components to achieve holistic project impact.
Collaborate with the Program Officer (Disaster Management) to ensure compliance with donor guidelines, quality standards, and timely delivery.
Facilitate stakeholder engagement with county governments (Makueni and Kitui), donors, private sector actors, and other partners through Business-to-Business (B2B) meetings, agribusiness fairs, and field days.
Support youth, women smallholder farmers, and Farmer Service Centers (FSCs) to participate in agricultural fairs to showcase innovations and build market linkages.
Monitor budgeted resources for market systems activities in collaboration with the Grants Finance Officer to ensure efficient utilization.
Develop and distribute technical materials on value chain development, market systems strengthening, pro-smallholder procurement, and business development to partners.
Promote strategies for youth and women engagement in sustainable income generation through climate-smart value chains and inclusive business models (e.g., school feeding programs).
Support post-harvest practice improvements, climate-resilient value chains, and access to gender-inclusive financial services.
Quality Assurance - Design, Monitoring, Evaluation and Budget Utilization
Work with the MEA&L Coordinator and stakeholders to implement monitoring and evaluation tools for MSD and Livelihood Value Chain Development (LVCD).
Develop a monitoring plan for MSD/LVCD interventions, capturing data on market linkages, business model adoption, and value chain performance using WVK’s DM&E systems (e.g., Horizon).
Adhere to PSC and County PSC decisions, ensuring alignment with project design, Kenyan regulations, and donor standards.
Track expenditure levels and value for money for market systems activities, maintaining high financial accountability.
Compile monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, highlighting success stories of market access and private sector engagement.
Collaborate with the communications department to document innovations, such as outcomes from B2B meetings and mindset change dialogues.
Conduct regular progress reviews with partners to address technical issues like post-harvest loss management and food safety.
Support measurements, baselines, assessments, and evaluations, ensuring integration of livelihoods with natural resource management, gender, advocacy, and policy.
Work closely with the Senior Manager (DMT) to maintain controls for effective, timely, and compliant project delivery.
Advocacy, Strategic Partnerships, Linkages and Network Development
Engage county governments to leverage resources for program sustainability, advocating for policies supporting CSA and nutrition-sensitive agriculture.
Participate in National and County Sector Technical Working Groups to promote pro-smallholder policies.
Build partnerships with private sector actors, financial institutions, and government bodies for technical capacity development in CSA, inputs, and financial services.
Contribute to agricultural and food safety policy formulation to support school feeding programs and other markets.
Support context-specific media communications and keep stakeholders informed of laws, policies, and budget changes affecting agriculture.
Capacity Development
Build the capacity of smallholder farmers, FSCs, aggregators, and farmer organizations in CSA, market systems, leadership, financial literacy, and nutrition-sensitive agriculture.
Develop inclusive training curricula on CSA, Agri-Nutrition, gender roles, and procurement processes for youth, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Establish sustainable capacity-building methodologies like Training of Trainers (ToT) and community dialogue forums.
Support local institutions, including Voluntary Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and FSCs, for long-term sustainability.
