Food for Education is a non-profit organization that works with vulnerable children in the public school system to improve their lives and school performance. Founded in 2012, Food for Education provides subsidized school meals every day to over 15,000 kids with a goal of feeding 1,000,000 kids by 2025. We are looking for a Product Designer who can own meaningful chunks of product work end-to-end—turning messy, real operational problems into clear flows, interfaces, and shipped outcomes.
You will work across mobile and web, partner tightly with PMs and engineers, and stay close to the field realities (schools/kitchens/logistics) that make our context uniquely demanding.
Key Responsibilities
- End-to-end Feature Design: Own the process from problem framing, flows, interaction/visual design, prototyping, and handoff to iteration in production.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with Product, Engineering, QA, Data, and Operations to define solutions and ship in iterative modules using Agile delivery.
- User Persona Design: Design for multiple personas including parents, tappers, school admins, kitchen teams, and internal operations, ensuring role-based clarity.
- Operational Problem Solving: Design for constraints such as offline-first or low-connectivity patterns, queue-speed interactions, older Android devices, and high-stakes accuracy.
- Prototyping: Use clickable prototypes to learn fast, validate workflows, and de-risk engineering before build.
- Design System Contribution: Push consistency across all digital solutions by contributing to the internal design system.
- UX Research: Participate in or lead usability testing and incorporate findings into iterations with a focus on measurable improvements.
- Stakeholder Communication: Present rationale, trade-offs, and decisions in reviews to keep stakeholders aligned.
- Handoff Discipline: Maintain clean files, component reuse, accessibility notes, and developer-friendly specs.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: BA/BSc/HND degree.
- Experience: 3–6 years of experience in product design (mobile and web), owning features end-to-end in a cross-functional team.
- Interaction Design: Strong fundamentals in flows, states, edge cases, information architecture, and usability.
- Visual Craft: Strong UI execution skills (spacing, hierarchy, layout, typography) with comfort working within a design system.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with Figma (components, variants, auto-layout, prototyping).
- Agile Delivery: Experience shipping in increments and improving based on feedback and data.
- Communication: Ability to translate messy requirements into clear, buildable specs and explain trade-offs clearly.
Nice to Have
- Experience designing for offline/low-bandwidth environments or emerging-market contexts.
- Experience designing for operational tools like logistics, inventory, or field ops.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG).
- Comfort running lightweight usability tests or field discovery.
