Job Description
The Press and Media Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Public Diplomacy Officer (SCC/Media) or PAO designee. This position involves monitoring Kenyan press and media coverage of issues important to the U.S., identifying and advising Mission leadership on strategies for promoting accurate and balanced media coverage of U.S. foreign policy and American interests, and countering misinformation or disinformation. The role requires building productive professional relationships with media professionals both in person and online.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Press and Media Engagement Operations (60%)
Design and implement media activities to promote informed coverage of U.S. policy.
Respond to breaking stories, correct misinformation, and counter disinformation.
Organize Mission initiatives to engage with the press, assessing news cycles for optimal timing and determining appropriate protocol for on- or off-the-record information sharing.
Strategic Planning (20%)
Develop strategies for Mission engagement with Kenyan press and media.
Analyze media audiences, geographic reach, political tendencies, and credibility to prioritize engagement with key outlets.
Recommend media strategies for the Ambassador and other Mission leadership based on expertise and portfolio.
Intra- and Interagency Coordination (10%)
Advise colleagues on promoting U.S. policy positions with media outlets to maximize accurate coverage.
Coordinate media engagement for all Mission agencies (legal, economic, military, etc.).
Repurpose media guidance for non-media audiences in coordination with the Strategic Content Coordination team.
Administrative Functions (10%)
Budgeting: Prepare and track annual budgets for press activities in consultation with the Resource Coordination unit.
Grants: Serve as Grants Officer Representative (GOR) for media training grants or cooperative agreements if required.
General: Maintain office records and ensure initiatives are recorded in PD Tools and contact databases.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: A university degree in Journalism, Communications, International Relations, Political Science, Economics, or a closely related field is required.
Experience: A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience is required. This experience should be in a media outlet, think tank, university, NGO, international organization, foreign embassy, or government office with responsibilities covering public relations, public affairs, journalism, marketing, and media interactions.
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain and hold a Public Trust security clearance.
Skills: Ability to manage public relations, outreach events, press conferences, and complex media interactions.
Evaluations: Candidates may be required to complete a pre-employment language or skills test.
