This position is responsible for providing technical guidance on animal production, health, feeding, value addition, and marketing within Nairobi City County. The Livestock Production Officer will play a vital role in enhancing the local agricultural economy by advising farmers on best practices, managing livestock data, and implementing county-wide development programs.
Job Purpose
To provide technical guidance on animal production, health, feeding, value addition, and marketing in the county.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Documentation: Prepare livestock technical information for internal and external stakeholders.
Technical Advice: Provide expertise in animal production, livestock marketing, value addition, and food safety.
Promotion: Encourage economic livestock farming among community members.
Extension Services: Organize and participate in extension activities, including field days, agricultural shows, field demonstrations, farmer field schools, and farm visits.
Research: Participate in collaborative research activities to improve county livestock outcomes.
Technology Dissemination: Disseminate livestock production technologies such as the construction of livestock housing and structures, milk production techniques, fodder production/conservation, farm planning, gross margin analysis, and on-farm feed formulation.
Program Implementation: Implement livestock production programs and projects in areas such as dairy cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, and other animal husbandry interventions.
Data Management: Capture, maintain, and store comprehensive livestock data.
Requirements and Qualifications
Academic Background: Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Animal Production, or Animal Health and Production from a recognized institution.
Computer Literacy: Certificate in computer application skills from a recognized institution.
Eligibility: New appointment, or Livestock Production in-post designates (originally Diploma holders who have attained a Bachelor of Science degree).
Integrity: Must satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya regarding leadership and integrity.
