This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the provision of animal health, veterinary public health, and animal control and welfare matters in the county. The role involves both supervisory duties at the sub-county level and direct operational tasks in veterinary services and public health enforcement.
Key Responsibilities
Managerial and Supervisory Duties
Coordinate all veterinary activities within the Sub County.
Supervise Sub-County Veterinary Technical Officers to ensure service standards are met.
Operational Responsibilities and Tasks
Oversee the construction and maintenance of essential farm structures.
Inspect and verify imports and exports of animal-related consignments.
Provide training and advice to farmers on milking techniques and parasite control methods like dipping and spraying.
Perform clinical procedures including vaccinations, closed castration, dehorning, animal identification, and simple medical treatments.
Participate in disease surveillance, collecting data, and compiling technical reports.
Maintain records for animal breeding, milk production, dipping data, and slaughterhouse operations.
Manage dairy units and participate in agricultural shows and field demonstrations.
Handle equipment sterilization and the collection and dispatch of diagnostic samples.
Inspect livestock stock routes and manage experimental animal rearing.
Issue livestock movement permits and perform artificial insemination.
Enforce meat transport regulations and inspect retail outlets selling foods of animal origin.
Requirements
Academic Background: Bachelor’s degree in Animal Health Management, Animal Health and Production, or Environmental Health Sciences from a recognized institution.
Professional Certification: Mandatory registration and retention by the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB).
IT Proficiency: Certificate in Computer application skills from a recognized Institution.
Regulatory Standing: Must meet the leadership and integrity requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
Experience: This is an entry-level position.
