The Leather Development Officer is responsible for supervising the improvement of the quality of hides and skins and promoting leather value addition for local and international markets. This role involves a combination of regulatory enforcement, technical advisory services, and industry training to enhance the leather value chain within Nairobi City County.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and supervise Leather Development Assistants and Hides and Skins Inspectors.
Inspect curing premises for the purpose of registration and adherence to standards.
Train, examine, and manage the issuance/renewals of slaughter man's licenses for flayers.
Ensure legal requirements pertaining to the hides and skins trade are strictly complied with.
Arbitrate in hides and skins trading disputes.
Advise tanners and cottage industries on the technical and economic aspects of producing various types of leather and leather products.
Provide advisory services to traders on hides and skins and leather trade, including simple feasibility studies on leather development projects.
Advise on salt types, storage, and application methods in curing hides and skins.
Identify markets where new curing premises (bandas) and stores are needed and oversee their construction or expansion.
Participate in field days, barazas, and workshops to advise livestock farmers on proper handling methods for quality production.
Train and demonstrate appropriate methods of flaying, cleaning, curing, and storage to traders and flayers.
Oversee the issuance of dispatch notes for disease control and monitor trade trends to curb illegal trade.
Perform training and instructing duties in training institutions.
Academic Qualifications and Professional Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in Leather Technology or any other relevant qualification from a recognized institution.
Certificate in Computer application skills from a recognized institution.
Entry-level position; no prior specific experience required.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational and negotiation skills.
Ability to build and lead cohesive teams.
Proven problem-solving skills.
Must meet the leadership and integrity requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
