Job Description
The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established to carry out health research in Kenya. KEMRI is seeking qualified Laboratory Technologists to be based in Kilifi. The successful candidates will be responsible for processing biological samples, conducting experiments, and ensuring the highest standards of quality assurance and laboratory safety are maintained within the research facility.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Management: Receive samples, ensure all relevant support documentation is provided, and store samples in line with applicable Study Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Experimental Procedures: Conduct experiments, interpret and document results, update relevant databases, and communicate results according to established laboratory procedures.
Quality Control: Conduct Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) tasks; participate in lab quality audits, study monitoring visits, and other initiatives to improve lab processes and compliance.
Equipment Maintenance: Standardize, calibrate, perform basic troubleshooting, and carry out preventive maintenance on assigned laboratory equipment and workspaces.
Resource Management: Support the efficient use of laboratory resources and consumables; monitor usage and liaise with relevant teams for timely replenishment.
Health and Safety: Ensure the assigned workspace and all experiments are fully compliant with Lab Health and Safety protocols, internal study policies, and external legal/ethical requirements.
Mentorship and Training: Provide guidance and training to assigned researchers, students, and interns; participate in internal meetings and scientific forums.
Requirements
Education: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences or a relevant field from a recognized institution.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a related laboratory environment.
Professional Registration: Mandatory registration by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) with a valid practicing license.
Technical Skills: Experience in the use of technology in lab operations, knowledge of Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLPs), and familiarity with regulatory/accreditation agency requirements.
Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation skills, and the ability to build effective teams.
Core Competencies: High levels of confidentiality and integrity, strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver quality outputs within strict timelines.
