Job Description
The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is seeking an Early Post-Doctoral Researcher specialized in Malaria and Sickle Cell research to be based in Kilifi. This role is designed for a scientist to lead laboratory efforts in adapting transgenic and wild-type P. falciparum parasites and performing functional assays. The position involves scientific leadership, grant proposal development, and the mentorship of junior researchers and students within a high-standard research environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the adaptation of transgenic and wild type P. falciparum parasites in in-vitro cultures.
Perform functional assays to characterize P. falciparum adhesion phenotypes.
Network, collaborate, and partner with malaria and red blood cell genetics partners and other internal/external stakeholders.
Support Project Management to ensure high-quality outputs and timely completion of research projects.
Work with the Principal Investigator and other Programme Researchers to identify sustainable funding opportunities and develop proposals for research grants.
Develop and maintain user-friendly learning materials and aids to support routine inference.
Organize and deliver short online refresher courses where necessary.
Mentor, train, and supervise junior researchers, students, and interns by implementing scientific research mentorship approaches.
Disseminate and publish research findings through policy briefs, manuscripts, and reputable scientific journals.
Present findings at internal and external meetings, conferences, and workshops.
Manage study teams by providing direct supervision and participating in HR management issues as assigned.
Ensure full compliance with internal protocols, Lab Safety policies, and legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements across all research phases.
Qualifications and Requirements
A Minimum PhD in Immunology or any other relevant field from a recognized university (Mandatory).
Minimum of one (1) year of academic or practical experience at a reputable research institution (Mandatory).
Demonstrated experience in capacity building and the use of current technology in health research.
Specific proficiency in using analytical software such as Linux, STATA, and R (Mandatory).
Demonstrated high levels of integrity and confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams and build strong relationships with collaborators.
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to deliver quality outputs within strict timelines.
Strong team coordination and decision-making skills.
