The Head of SME Business is a senior leadership role responsible for driving growth and profitability within the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) segments. The successful candidate will lead strategic acquisition, manage the SME loan book, and drive deposit mobilization while overseeing high-performing sales teams.
Responsibilities
SME Client Acquisition & Lending Growth
Drive the acquisition and onboarding of SME and MSME clients.
Deliver on SME and MSME lending disbursement targets.
Build and manage a strong sales pipeline to improve conversion rates.
Portfolio Productivity & Revenue Optimisation
Manage average loan sizes and yields to ensure segment profitability.
Encourage the utilization of approved credit limits.
Ensure sustainable and quality growth of the SME loan portfolio.
Deposits Mobilisation & Liability Growth
Deliver net deposit growth targets across the SME customer base.
Increase the proportion of low-cost deposits (CASA).
Optimise the cost of funds associated with SME deposits.
Drive fee income through SME transactional banking activities.
Portfolio Quality & Risk Management
Maintain portfolio quality within defined acceptable thresholds.
Identify and resolve arrears at an early stage.
Uphold high standards for credit underwriting, monitoring, and reporting.
Ensure full compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
Market Intelligence & Business Strategy
Monitor market trends, customer needs, and competitor activities within the SME space.
Provide strategic input for product development and commercial strategies.
Sales Leadership & Team Management
Lead and motivate SME sales teams to achieve aggregated business targets.
Drive staff productivity (measured by business per staff).
Manage performance through coaching, development, and succession planning.
Maintain acceptable staff attrition levels.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
A Master’s degree is considered an added advantage.
Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in SME banking or business development.
Proven track record in lending, sales, and portfolio management.
Demonstrated experience in managing and leading sales teams.
