The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is seeking a Green Champion to support its initiatives in climate resilience and sustainable agriculture. This role involves working directly with communities to promote nature-based solutions, regenerative farming, and clean energy adoption.
Key Responsibilities
Promote Regenerative Farming
Mobilization: Mobilize smallholder farmers for training through existing community structures.
Training: Develop fieldwork schedules and train target farmers in collaboration with coordinators.
Data Collection: Collect data related to the adoption and impact on farmers' yields, input cost reductions, and income.
Documentation: Support the documentation of success stories, lessons learned, and best practices from fieldwork.
Establishment of Microforests, Agroforestry, and Mangroves Restoration
Site Assessments: Carry out site assessments and participate in planting and follow-up activities at designated sites.
Nursery Support: Assist community members, particularly women, in the establishment of tree nurseries.
Monitoring: Conduct monitoring visits to determine tree survival rates, disease/pest surveillance, and changes in biodiversity.
Assessments: Support nutrition assessments by analyzing community diets, nutrition gaps, and cultural practices.
Demonstrations: Deliver nutrition-focused practical demonstrations while promoting dietary diversity and improved household nutrition.
Kitchen Gardens: Support households to establish and maintain gardens to ensure year-round food availability.
Market Linkages & Livelihood Strengthening
Value Chains: Support farmer groups to identify priority value chains and improve aggregation and quality standards.
Business Training: Coordinate training on post-harvest handling, value addition, and basic business/financial literacy.
Infrastructure: Support groups in managing collection, handling, and storage systems for produce.
Clean Energy and Water Management Initiatives
Assessments: Carry out site assessments for clean energy and water establishment sites.
Adoption: Support community members, particularly women, in adopting clean energy solutions and water harvesting infrastructure.
Monitoring: Document and monitor established clean energy and water harvesting assets.
Documentation, Reporting, and Learning
Reporting: Document progress in uptake of regenerative farming, clean energy, and water harvesting.
Stakeholder Briefs: Contribute to project briefs for internal and external stakeholders.
Workshops: Participate in training workshops to enhance community understanding of nature-based solutions.
Communication and Outreach
Awareness: Support outreach efforts to raise awareness about climate resilience.
Materials: Assist in the development of audio-visual and print communication materials.
Administration: Compile activity reports and maintain signed attendance registers.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: At least Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Grade D+.
Professional Certification: At least a Certificate in General Agriculture, Community Development, Forestry, or Agroforestry from a recognized Institution in Kenya.
Age Profile: Youth between 18 to 30 years of age, particularly women.
Languages: Ability to communicate in English and Kiswahili (both written and spoken).
Soft Skills: Ability to deliver training, prepare reports, handle multitasking, and meet tight deadlines.
Geographic Preference: Applicants who are residents of Kinango, Vanga, Shimba Hills, Tsimba Golini, and Ndavaya are highly encouraged to apply.
