About the Role
The Driver / Mechanic shall be responsible and accountable for the execution of daily transportation of students and the mechanical maintenance of Nova Pioneer’s fleet of motor vehicles. The Driver/ Mechanic reports directly to the Transport Manager.
Key Deliverables & Responsibilities
Driving Duties
- Operate the school motor vehicle in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure that the “door to door” policy for dropping and picking pupils is maintained.
- Follow planned routes on a strict time schedule and ensure all pupils on the route are on board before the journey starts.
- Work together with the bus assistant in maintaining order and discipline in the bus.
- Report and document any vehicle defect on a daily basis.
- Observe speed limits and all road signs, and fuel the vehicle according to the schedule.
- Drive pupils to educational trips, sports activities, and other school activities safely.
- Document actual mileage, timings, and destination in the vehicle movement book before every trip.
- Undertake daily routine checks for tires, oil, radiator coolant, and lights.
- Notify the Transport Manager of any accidents, incidents, delays, route diversions, or riots immediately.
- Ensure the school vehicle is kept clean and safely parked on campus or during trips.
Mechanic Duties & Responsibilities
- Diagnosis & Troubleshooting: Establish the nature of mechanical problems, track their frequency, and conduct inspections/test-drives to ensure issues are resolved.
- Repairs: Undertake or supervise mechanical repairs on engine components, cooling systems, suspension, steering, braking, transmission, and exhaust systems.
- Routine Maintenance: Perform weekly safety and maintenance checks on all Nova Pioneer vehicles and document data to monitor Key Performance Indicators.
- Documentation: Maintain complete and accurate records, including Job Cards for every repair performed.
- Feedback: Propose and provide feedback to the Transport Manager on repairs and maintain a proactive approach.
- Timelines: Work within strict timelines to ensure school vehicles are ready for daily routes with minimal interruption.
- General Support: Perform other duties such as running errands, transporting staff, and ferrying students for emergency medical cases.
Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to the Nova Pioneer Transport Policy, Employee Handbook, and all relevant internal standards.
- Ensure all National and County legal requirements (licenses, permits, certificates) are updated and current.
- Conduct weekly workplace inspections to ensure adherence to Health & Safety protocols.
- Responsibly handle and operate tools and equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Diploma in Auto-mechanical engineering from a recognized institution.
- Licenses: Valid BCE-Class Driving License held for more than 8 years and a valid PSV License.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years’ experience specifically with school bus transportation.
- Certification: Valid Certificate of Good Conduct (not older than 6 months).
- Recommendations: Must provide recommendations from 3 previous employers.
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the highway code, school bus regulations, and first aid.
- Soft Skills: Analytical problem-solving, client service skills, and effective verbal/listening communication skills.
