The Director Veterinary Services is responsible for directing, coordinating, and implementing veterinary services programs and projects within Nairobi County. This senior role involves managing animal health, control, and veterinary public health services, ensuring the implementation of relevant policies, and overseeing leather development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Managerial and Supervisory Responsibilities
Direct animal health, animal control, and veterinary public health services in the county.
Coordinate the implementation of animal health, animal control, veterinary public health, and leather development policies.
Manage the county directorate of veterinary services human resource capacity development.
Manage fiscal resources for the directorate.
Provision and improvement of administrative services.
Supervise and manage staff, programs, and administrative functions for the directorate.
Conduct staff performance appraisals.
Operational Responsibilities
Promote collaboration of stakeholders' participation in animal health, animal control, veterinary public health, and leather development service delivery.
Coordinate veterinary research liaison and training programs in the county.
Coordinate implementation of work plans and budgets for veterinary services in the directorate.
Ensure compilation of periodic reports and preparation of performance contracts for the directorate.
Provide technical guidance in all aspects of animal health, animal control, veterinary public health, and leather development.
Coordinate veterinary services technical forums, workshops, and seminars.
Provide and improve administrative links between the county headquarters and field services.
Ensure disease reporting between county headquarters and the National Directorate of Veterinary Services aligns with World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) standards.
Participate in monitoring and evaluation of animal health, animal control, veterinary public health, and leather development projects and programs.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree: Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from a recognized institution.
Master's Degree: Master of Science Degree in any of the following disciplines: Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology, Applied Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, or Occupational Health and Safety.
Professional Registration: Registration and retention by the Kenya Veterinary Board.
Management Training: Certificate in Senior Management Course (at least 4 weeks) or any other Management Course from a recognized institution.
Experience: Minimum of ten (10) years of experience, with at least three (3) years in a senior position within the Public Service or Private Sector.
Competencies: Leadership skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, ability to work under pressure, negotiation skills, and problem-solving skills.
Compliance: Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya regarding leadership and integrity.
