The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world's environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the environment.
Role Overview
UNEP is seeking a Development Coordination and Food System Consultant to provide technical and advisory support to the Regional Development Coordination (RDC) team in Africa. The consultant will support the integration of transition pathways for SDG implementation, coordinate with UN Resident Coordinators, and support projects related to food systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Support: Provide technical support in the development of Common Country Analyses (CCAs) and the elaboration of UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UN-CF), including mainstreaming the 6 transition pathways for UN-CFs developed in 2026-2027 to accelerate SDG implementation in Africa.
- Coordination: Coordinate and support the implementation of the outcomes of the 2nd UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) dialogue to ensure UNEP’s enhanced support to UN Country Teams (UNCTs) and UNRC systems.
- Advisory Services: Provide technical and advisory support between the RDC Unit and the Results Groups on the ground, UN Resident Coordinators, and National Institutions.
- Technical Backstopping: Provide technical backstopping to the UNCT Focal Point (FP) system in Africa in alignment with the agency's delivery model to strengthen country engagements and UNEP's visibility.
- Capacity Building: Deliver technical capacity building on the UNCT FP mechanism in response to calls from UN Resident Coordinator Offices (RCOs) and sub-regional heads based on requests from UNCTs and member states.
- Quality Assessments: Provide technical support for CCA and UN-CF end cycle quality assessments (Peer Support Group-PSG) to authorize the finalization of the UN-CF development process at country level.
- Leadership Support: Support the Regional Director (RD) and Deputy Regional Director (DRD) in their roles of high-level political representation across the region, including the elaboration of briefing notes, country briefs, and strategic readouts.
- Reporting Guidance: Provide technical guidance to UNCT reporting, including UN INFO reporting of UNEP's initiatives in Africa.
- Project Management: Provide technical support in the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the Africa Office Management Project.
- Resource Mobilization: Support resource mobilization and environmental financing to support the UN-RC system to integrate innovative financing for SDG implementation while simultaneously developing bankable pipelines of national projects.
- Food Systems: Support projects in the Regional Development Coordination team related to food systems.
