Job Description
Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) is a not-for-profit organization established in Kenya whose goal is to alleviate poverty and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kenya. The Communications Officer will collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Head of Programme, Project Managers, Partnership and Business Development Lead, and other colleagues to ensure communications strategies, media relations, and organizational outreach efforts are aligned with corporate policies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy and Advocacy
Lead the development and implementation of BvAT’s Communication Strategy and relevant policies.
Lead BvAT’s Communication Committee and conduct communication needs assessments for projects and programmes.
Design and implement outreach and advocacy strategies, including branding guidelines and social media strategies.
Integrate communication strategies into project proposals and participate in conferences and campaigns.
Public Advocacy Materials
Produce communication instruments including briefing materials, press releases, and articles.
Coordinate dissemination of materials according to corporate standards.
Oversee the production of audio/visual materials by supervising video producers and specialists.
Develop brochures, factsheets, and field stories for donors and the public.
Media Relations
Implement media strategies to enhance BvAT’s positioning.
Build relationships with the press and maintain a contact database.
Facilitate interviews with subject experts and senior managers.
Respond to media inquiries and identify impactful success stories for pitching.
Organize press conferences and briefing sessions.
Partnerships and Online Presence
Develop new communication partnerships and nurture existing ones.
Liaise with civil society and government advocacy partners.
Oversee the organization’s web presence, maintaining content for the website and social media accounts.
Develop and manage a strategic social media calendar in line with corporate policy.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, Journalism, or a related field.
At least 5 years of professional work experience at national or international levels in public relations or communications.
Experience in social media use and media relations.
Experience with content management systems (CMS), preferably WordPress.
Familiarity with agroecology or sustainable agriculture is desirable.
Required Skills and Competencies
Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across technical and non-technical content.
Proficiency in web publishing, SEO, and basic graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Suite).
Excellent coordination, time management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Ability to communicate sensitively and creatively across diverse user groups.
