Role Overview
This is a middle-level technical position at Pwani University. The Assistant Laboratory Technician I – Gross Anatomy is responsible for providing technical support to the Gross Anatomy department, assisting in instructional activities, and ensuring the efficient operation of laboratory facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Support: Assist and train students on collecting, processing, and preservation of samples in both the field and laboratory. Support Gross Anatomy lecturers in practical demonstrations.
Laboratory Management: Maintain the Gross Anatomy laboratory and assist the demonstrator with teaching and grading duties for practicals.
Specimen Preparation: Prepare reagents, preservative solutions, samples, and specimens for practical classes and examinations.
Technical Setup: Assemble supplies, construct apparatus, and set up classroom experiments and demonstrations. Organize OSCE and viva voce sessions for Gross Anatomy assessments.
Research and Standards: Provide technical assistance to researchers and prepare/implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Administrative Duties: Assist in budget preparation, maintain updated inventories for consumables and non-consumables, and participate in resource mobilization (e.g., infrastructure and equipment grants).
Equipment Maintenance: Troubleshoot machine errors, perform general maintenance, and manage internal calibration.
Quality Control: Participate in laboratory quality management systems and ensure proper disposal of solutions and specimens according to guidelines.
Requirements and Experience
Academic Qualifications: Must hold a Diploma in Gross Anatomy and a Higher National Diploma in Gross Anatomy, Mortuary/Mortician Services, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
Experience: At least two (2) years of relevant work experience. Experience working in a higher institution of learning is an added advantage.
Professional Membership: Be a member of relevant professional bodies.
Community Engagement: Demonstrate community involvement (e.g., as a member of BOG, SMC, etc.).
