The Assistant Director Veterinary Services is a senior position within the Nairobi City County Public Service responsible for providing and overseeing animal health services, veterinary public health, and animal disease control and welfare services. This role involves supervising technical officers at the sub-county level and implementing strategic interventions to ensure the health and safety of livestock and animal products within the county.
Key Responsibilities
Managerial and Supervisory
Supervise Sub-County technical officers in implementing planned pest and disease control activities.
Coordinate and promote the development and transfer of appropriate technologies for disease control.
Operational Tasks
Participate in conducting economic impact assessments of animal diseases.
Undertake forensic investigations and compile appropriate reports.
Provide veterinary services at ports of entry.
Execute disease control activities, including searching, mapping, vaccination, and enforcing livestock movement regulations.
Train stakeholders on vector control programs, animal health, breeding, animal welfare, and best veterinary practices.
Treat sick animals and perform postmortem examinations and other diagnostic tests.
Analyze data and prepare comprehensive reports on animal health, products, and markets.
Interpret laboratory results and provide evidence-based recommendations.
Inspect, grade, and license animal product processing plants and transport carriers.
Examine animals and issue health certificates.
Participate in field efficacy trials for drugs, vaccines, and acaricides.
Disseminate information on animal health and markets while collaborating with relevant stakeholders.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from a recognized institution.
Advanced Degree: Master of Science Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Surgery, Public Health, Anatomy, Epidemiology and Economics, or Occupational Safety and Health is an added advantage.
Experience: Must have served in the grade of Chief Veterinary Officer (Job Group N) for a minimum period of three (3) years.
Professional Certification: Registration and valid retention by the Kenya Veterinary Board.
Additional Training: Certificate in Computer application skills and a Management Course from a recognized institution.
Competence: Demonstrated high degree of professional and technical competence and administrative capabilities.
Integrity: Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya on leadership and integrity.
