The Weight and Measures Officer is responsible for ensuring fair trade practices and consumer protection within the county through the enforcement of legal metrology standards. The role involves the inspection and verification of weighing and measuring instruments used in trade, ensuring compliance with the Weights and Measures Act, and investigating instances of trade fraud.
Key Responsibilities
Verify and stamp weighing and measuring instruments used for trade to ensure accuracy.
Conduct regular inspections and surprise visits to trading premises to enforce compliance with the Weights and Measures Act.
Investigate complaints related to false weights and measures and take appropriate legal actions.
Maintain comprehensive records of all verification and inspection activities.
Provide technical advice on trade standards and metrology to stakeholders.
Assist in the prosecution of individuals or businesses violating trade measurement laws.
Requirements and Qualifications
Be a Kenyan citizen.
Served in Weights & Measures for a minimum period of three (3) years.
Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Law, Legal Metrology, Information Communication Technology, Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronic), Microprocessors or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
Advanced Certificate of the Institute of Trade Standards Administration (Kenya).
Be a member of the Institute of Trade Standards Administration (Kenya).
Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution.
Integrity Clearance Requirements
Successful applicants are expected to get clearance from the following bodies:
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
Credit Reference Bureau (CRB)
Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)
Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI)
For those with higher education certificates (degrees) from outside Kenya, a letter of recognition of qualifications from the Commission for University Education is mandatory.
