Job Description
The WASH Assistant (Sanitation and Hygiene) will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day implementation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities. This role involves supervising community-based sanitation activities and conducting hygiene promotion to improve the health and living environments of refugees and host populations in the Dadaab region.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Sanitation: Supervise the construction and maintenance of household and communal latrines, ensuring all work complies with Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) and UNHCR technical standards.
Hygiene Promotion: Conduct community outreach sessions focused on handwashing, safe water storage, and waste management to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.
Monitoring & Reporting: Assist in water quality testing (specifically residual chlorine monitoring) and collect field data for monthly progress reports.
Community Engagement: Work closely with WASH Committees and community leaders to ensure project ownership, active participation, and long-term sustainability.
Emergency Response: Support rapid WASH assessments and the distribution of hygiene kits during disease outbreaks or influxes of new arrivals.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Public Health or a related field.
Experience: At least 2 years of experience in WASH interventions, preferably within an NGO setting. Experience working in refugee camp settings such as Kakuma or Dadaab is considered a significant advantage.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in water quality testing, basic plumbing, or construction supervision of sanitation facilities is an added advantage.
Soft Skills: Ability to work effectively under pressure in hardship environments and strong interpersonal skills for successful community mobilization.
