Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a fully fledged chartered university committed to a broad-based, wholistic and inclusive system of education. The university is seeking to recruit a Visiting Lecturer in Ophthalmology to deliver high-quality instruction and contribute to the academic excellence of the Medical School. Reporting to the Dean of the Medical School, the successful candidate will facilitate learning, assess student progress, and engage in scholarly activities.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction and Facilitation: Deliver lectures and facilitate learning sessions in assigned areas of specialization, when units are available, in accordance with the approved curriculum and course outline.
Material Preparation: Prepare and submit teaching materials, lesson plans, and learning resources for assigned courses in a timely manner.
Assessment: Administer Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs), assignments, practical assessments, and examinations as scheduled. Set, invigilate, and mark examinations and submit results within the stipulated timelines.
Student Support: Provide students with academic guidance, mentorship, and support in their areas of study.
Records Management: Maintain accurate student attendance records, assessment records, and academic progress reports as required by the University.
Quality Assurance: Participate in curriculum review and academic quality assurance activities when called upon.
Professional Development: Keep abreast of developments and emerging trends within the relevant academic or professional field to enrich teaching and learning.
Scholarly Activity: Engage in scholarly and professional activities including research, publications, conferences, seminars, or professional practice where applicable.
Compliance: Observe and comply with University policies, academic regulations, and professional standards during the period of engagement.
Other Duties: Undertake any other academic-related duties assigned by the Dean or Head of Department from time to time.
Requirements and Qualifications
Medical Degree: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).
Master's Degree: Masters of Medicine in Ophthalmology from a recognized academic institution.
Teaching Experience: At least three years teaching and research experience at a university level.
Professional Registration: Must be registered and licensed to practice by the Relevant Professional Body (KMPDC).
Work Experience: Relevant work experience in the industry.
Advanced Degree (Added Advantage): An earned PhD degree qualification in the relevant area from a recognized/accredited university OR being registered/registrable for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.
