Avenue Healthcare is seeking a dedicated Unit Manager for the Psychiatry department. The successful candidate will lead the nursing team in providing high-quality mental health care, overseeing clinical operations, managing human resources, and ensuring the unit's financial and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
People Management
Supervision: Lead the Psychiatry team to achieve individual and team targets. Ensure nurses accurately perform tasks including admission, discharge, drug administration, clinical observations, and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
Scheduling: Prepare and manage monthly duty rotas; ensure safe coverage, appropriate skill-mix, leave planning, and productivity while controlling overtime and locum utilization.
Leadership: Oversee onboarding, orientation, coaching, daily work allocation, and mentorship. Conduct performance appraisals and manage staff wellness and engagement.
Financial and Operational Management
Financial Viability: Ensure the unit is financially viable and demonstrates growth.
Patient Satisfaction: Manage patient complaints and compliments, implementing improvement actions and monitoring service recovery trends (including NPS).
Cost Control: Manage unit costs within budget through optimized staffing, accurate billing, and efficient consumables management.
Asset Management: Ensure proper inventory management, standardization, calibration, and maintenance of all equipment.
Nursing Services
Clinical Oversight: Review patient investigations, analyze results, and initiate immediate interventions as required.
Collaboration: Engage with doctors and other providers regarding patient care plans using a team-based problem-solving approach.
Compliance: Implement SOPs and Quality Improvement Plans (QIPs), enforce IPC standards, and ensure adherence to all nursing protocols and Avenue Healthcare policies.
Incident Reporting: Record and report all sentinel incidents or events within 24 hours using provided tools.
Documentation: Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient treatment and maintain confidentiality during shift handovers.
Governance: Adhere to corporate governance policies, including fraud prevention and implementing audit recommendations.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Higher Diploma in Nursing (Psychiatric/Mental Health). A BSc in Nursing is considered an added advantage.
Licensing: Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid practicing license.
Certifications: Valid certification in BLS, ACLS, or ATLS.
Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of clinical experience in psychiatry/mental health and at least 2+ years of team management experience.
Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, results-oriented, customer-focused, and excellent communication abilities.
