The Tug Chief Officer serves as the second in command aboard the tug vessel, providing critical support to the Master in all aspects of vessel operations, navigation, and crew management. This role is responsible for the safe execution of marine operations including towing, docking, and mooring, while ensuring compliance with international maritime standards and safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Vessel Operations: Act as the second in command, supporting the Master with vessel operations, navigation, and crew management.
Marine Operations: Safely execute towing, docking, undocking, and assist with vessel mooring operations following established procedures and international standards.
Deck Supervision: Oversee and participate in the planning, coordination, and supervision of all deck activities to ensure safety and operational readiness.
Compliance: Ensure the deck crew operates in compliance with safety procedures, maritime regulations, and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.
Cargo & Ballast: Supervise cargo operations, maintaining proper load and ballast distribution during towage, fuel transfers, or port entry.
Safety Equipment: Monitor and maintain safety and firefighting equipment, ensuring systems are always operational and accessible.
Documentation: Oversee the upkeep of deck logs, voyage data, and reports to meet legal, regulatory, and contract requirements.
Maintenance: Implement routine maintenance, cleaning, and testing of deck equipment, including winches and towing gear.
Collaboration: Coordinate with the Chief Engineer regarding vessel readiness and mechanical status.
Navigation: Assist in navigating the tug for safe passage, maintaining situational awareness at all times.
Safety Officer Duties: Serve as the primary safety officer for deck operations, identifying risks and monitoring environmental compliance.
Inventory Management: Manage inventories of safety, navigation, and operational equipment.
Leadership: Step into the role of acting Captain if required in the absence of the Master.
Qualifications and Experience
Certification: Valid certification as Chief Mate (unlimited) or equivalent license as required under STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).
Experience: 3–5 years of relevant experience onboard tugs or similar vessels, involving towage, docking, and port services.
Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, and navigation standards.
Technical Skills: Proficient in rigging, deck operations, mooring, and towing procedures.
Emergency Management: Skilled in firefighting, man overboard recovery, and damage control.
Leadership: Demonstrated ability in team coordination and managing deck crews.
Logistics: Ability to maintain detailed logs and records for inspections.
Travel: Must possess a valid passport and be capable of international travel.
